چکیده

Introduction The recent epidemic rise in metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are considered to be a result of a sedentary lifestyle combined with a high caloric diet. Earlier reports have consistently shown a link between a high fat intake, especially saturated fat, and insulin resistance [1]. More recently, the intake of simple carbohydrates, especially fructose, have been suggested to result in insulin resistance [2]. Liver fat content in subjects with metabolic syndrome closely correlates with insulin resistance [3], and is readily measured by H-MRS [4]. Adipose tissue is the primary storage site for triglycerdies (fat), and much reasearch has focused on adipose tissue fatty acid composition as a marker of dietary fat composition. Adipose tissue is also implicated in the development of insulin resistance, with impared suppression of lipolysis suggested to result in accumulation of fat in the liver [3]. A non-invasive method for determining adipose tissue fat composition could provide new insights into the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. The objetive of this study was to use H-MRS to measure liver fat content and adipose tissue fat composition in male subjects with metabolic syndrome.

The effect of aerobic exercise on epicardial adipose tissue, insulin resistance, and some liver enzymes in high-fat diet-induced obesity male wistar rat

Background and Aim: Due to the prevalence and socio-economic consequences of obesity in mortality, cardiovascular (CAD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease the effectiveness of aerobic exercise on epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), insulin resistance (IR) and some liver enzymes of high-fat diet-induced obesity male wistar rats was investigated. Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar rats with an averag...

Subcutaneous lipectomy causes a metabolic syndrome in hamsters.

The insulin resistance syndrome X is related to excess intra-abdominal adipose tissue. With lipectomy of >50% of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SQAT) in nonhibernating, adult female Syrian hamsters on high-fat (HF; 50 calorie%) diet and measurements of oral glucose tolerance, oral [(14)C]oleic acid disposal, serum triglycerides, serum leptin, liver fat, perirenal (PR) adipose tissue cellularity, ...

A simple approach for improving lipid SNR for hepatic fat measurement with 1H MRS

Introduction Assessing lipid content in liver is of interest for number of pathologies and for observation of metabolic changes during therapy [1]. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is rapidly becoming the method of choice for non-invasive assessment of lipids in liver [2]. To avoid artifacts due to liver motion, MRS is often performed with a breath-hold approach [3, 4]. Given this limited ...

From Fat Location to Fat Function: Using MRI to Examine the Links Between Body Fat and Metabolic Outcomes Despite the well-known links between obesity and metabolic diseases, and the increased obesity and metabolic diseases among certain ethnic groups, the mechanisms

Despite the well-known links between obesity and metabolic diseases, and the increased obesity and metabolic diseases among certain ethnic groups, the mechanisms of these observations remain elusive. Several putative explanations exist for why fat affects metabolic health and how this might vary by ethnicity. One such theory is based on the anatomic location of fat deposition. Current literatur...

Liver fat accumulation in response to overfeeding with a high-fat diet: a comparison between South Asian and Caucasian men

BACKGROUND South Asians were reported to have a higher liver fat content as compared to BMI-matched Caucasians. This study compared the increase in liver fat content in response to overfeeding with a high fat diet in South Asian and Caucasian men when matched for body fat percentage. METHODS Ten South Asian men (BMI 18-29 kg/m(2)) and 10 Caucasian men (BMI 22-33 kg/m(2)), aged 20-40 y, matche...
